NOJHL Nickel Barons Hand the Soo Thunderbirds First Loss of the Season

BirdsIn a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League West division match-up the Soo Thunderbirds hosted the Sudbury Nickel Barons at the John Rhodes Centre at 7:30 p.m on September 20th. The Nickel Barons came into Sault Ste Marie in first place in the NOJHL with 10 points in 7 games while the Thunderbirds hit the ice with 4 points in 2 games.

Sudbury's Dylan Callaghan sank the Nickel Barons first goal 24 seconds into the game with assists from Peter Poulin-Roy and Khadyn Butterfly. With 1:03 left in the first period, Thunderbird Izaak Del Mastro who turned 19 years old today, scored his first NOJHL goal to tie the game 1 – 1 with helpers from Nic Sicoly and Brandon Grandinetti.

Soo Thunderbirds Double Up on Powassan Voodoos In Sault Ste Marie

BirdsThe Soo Thunderbirds entered their second game of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League with a 1 – 0 record while the Powassan Voodoos come into Sault Ste Marie a 1 – 3 – 1 record on Friday evening.

Brian Kment of the Thunderbirds and Jack Ondrovic of the Voodoos stopped all the shots during the first period sending both teams to the dressing rooms at the first intermission with a score of 0 – 0.

At 2:58 of the second period, Voodoos Steve Harland set up Michael Silveri to give Powassan a 1 – 0 lead.

St. Mary's Knights Are Victorious in Junior And Senior Girls High School Basketball

Girls BasketballThe St. Mary's Knights and the St. Basil Saints took to the court in junior and senior girls high school basketball action at St. Basil Secondary on September 18th.

In the junior game, St. Mary's Chrissy Colizza scored 14 points while teammate Emily Scarpino added another 12 points in the St. Mary's 42 – 32 win over the Saints at 5:15 p.m.

Algoma Soccer Teams take on Brock Badgers on September 20th and 21st.

algoma u thunderbirdsThe Algoma soccer teams continue their debut OUA season over the September 20th and 21st weekend when they travel to St. Catharines, Ontario to take on the Brock Badgers. In other varsity action, the men's basketball team will take to the court in their annual Red vs. White games this Friday and Saturday at the GLC.

Both Algoma soccer teams are currently 0-6 after losses to the Western Mustangs, the York Lions, and the Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks. The women's Badgers are currently 1-5, while the men's Brock squad is also looking for their first win of the season, at 0-4-2.
