Soo Greyhounds GM Kyle Dubas announced earlier today that the club is proud to name Joe Cirella Assistant Coach with the club. Terms of the 2-year deal were not disclosed.
"When we set out our plan to hire an assistant coach we had a very specific and narrow description of the type of coach and person we were looking for. We felt our program needed a coach with tremendous playing and coaching experience across many levels of hockey, with a preference towards that person having played and coached defence with tremendous knowledge of defensive systems” began Dubas.
“With that said, we are thrilled today to announce Joe Cirella as the new assistant coach of our hockey club. Joe brings some tremendous experience both playing - where he captained the Oshawa Generals to a OHL Championship, then went onto an excellent NHL career. As a coach, Joe has been an assistant at the NHL level under Doug MacLean and has 8 years of experience in the OHL.”
Cirella, a defenceman, played parts of three seasons with the Oshawa Generals. In 1983 the Hamilton, ON product served as team captain in Oshawa for the Generals as they won the J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHL Champions.
After being selected in the 1st Round (5th overall) by the Colorado Rockies in 1981, Cirella spent 14-years in the NHL spread among the Colorado Rockies, New Jersey Devils, Quebec Nordiques, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators.
In 828 games played he had 64 goals and 211 assists.
After retiring in 1997, Cirella became an Assistant Coach with the Florida Panther’s (1997/98) before joining the OHL’s Oshawa Generals as an Assistant Coach for 7 seasons (1998/99-2003/04 and 2010/11 – 2011/12). Joe also worked one season with the Peterborough Petes in 2009/2010 as a Defensive Consultant.
“I’m extremely excited and looking forward to working with Mike, Kyle and the Soo Greyhounds organization. Through the drafts, and moves they have made, I believe we have a culture to produce results” began Cirella.
“They have really opened their arms to me joining the club and I can’t wait to begin work with them and get into the community” he concluded.
Joe will join Mike Stapleton, Mike Oliverio and Seamus Kotyk in making up the club’s Coaching staff for the upcoming 2012-13 Ontario Hockey League season.
“The combination of Joe's character, experience, and record in developing players made us feel that bringing him into our program would a tremendous asset. We look forward to welcoming Joe to Sault Ste. Marie in the coming weeks” concluded Dubas.
