U13 Sault Boys Civics Win Gold in Shoot-Out

The U13 Boys Civics team once again advanced to the finals in their second tournament of the year only this time came away as tournament champions this past weekend in Sudbury.

The boys went undefeated during preliminary play with three wins and a tie which enabled them to capture first in the group and, as a result, advanced to the finals. They would face a strong North Bay squad however the Sault Civics would not be denied winning the game 2-1 in a penalty shoot-out.

In summary, the Civics defeated the Greater Sudbury Blaze 2-0 in their opening game. Lucas Stefano and Kristian Shuttleworth were the scorers. The second game resulted in a 5-0 win over Great Sudbury 98/99. Paul Zappacosta led the way with two goals and single goals going to David Gioia, Daniel VanBoerdonk and Lucas Stefano. The third game resulted in a 2-2 tie with the North Bay Selects Vipers. Nick Smith scored while David Gioia scored a last-minute game-tying goal. The Civics beat the Sudburnia All-Stars in their fourth and final preliminary game 3-1. Nick Smith notched two goals with Lucas Stefano adding the other.

The four wins allowed the team to advance to the finals to play North Bay. This would be a hard-fought battle with the score tied 1-1 after regulation and overtime. The game would have to be settled in a penalty shoot-out. The Sault would not be denied outscoring their opponent 4-3. Goal scorers in the shootout were Nick Smith, Kristian Shuttleworth, Christian Vecchio and David Gioia.

Strong goaltending throughout the tournament was provided by Aaron Grawbarger, with two shutouts and a very solid performance in the final game.
Next action for the U13 boys will be on August 18 when they travel to play in the Green Bay Soccer Invitational.
